The Patient’s Playbook: How to get the Best Care!
This book is a great start to getting the most out of our current (eh-hem, broken) healthcare system. It teaches you how to approach your own healthcare team: how to assemble it, what to look for, how to get the most out of your exams, and what to watch out for. Especially as we age, we need to have a healthcare team and plan that will allow us to prevent illness, but also to catch signs of illness early on for the least amount of interventions and the best quality of life. This book is great for people of all ages, it’s never too early (or too late!) to get the most out of your healthcare team. The author, Leslie Michelson, was made passionate about patient care when his father was misdiagnosed with a heart condition that would require open-heart surgery. When his father got a second opinion, it was ruled that his heart was perfectly healthy, and he lived another 40 years without a single problem with his heart! The open-heart surgery that was recommended was not necessary, and likely would have killed him, so Leslie was impassioned with task of figuring out how to navigate the healthcare system and how to empower people! I recommend this book to everyone, even healthcare professionals, to help yourself, and the people you love stay protected.
